Statins - JUPITER trial flawed and likely biased - statins worthless for primary prevention

PMID 20585068 de Lorgeril et al on 28th June 2010 in Archives of Internal Medicine

From the abstract:

"The JUPITER (Justification for the Use of Statins in Primary Prevention) trial is unique: it reports a substantial decrease in the risk of cardiovascular diseases among patients without coronary heart disease and with normal or low cholesterol levels

"RESULTS: The trial was flawed...

"The possibility that bias entered the trial is particularly concerning because of the strong commercial interest in the study...

"CONCLUSION: The results of the trial do not support the use of statin treatment for primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases and raise troubling questions concerning the role of commercial sponsors."

So how many people are taking a drug that is of NO BENEFIT and has MANY HARMFUL SIDE EFFECTS?

The cholesterol hypothesis - i.e. the idea that lowering cholesterol can prevent heart disease is wrong. The lipid hypothesis - i.e. the idea that saturated fat can cause heart disease has been proved wrong again and again. When will those in control of health budgets start to listen?
